Mathias Safarik from ILK Dresden will give a presentation during the Seminar Prospects for District Cooling

Mathias SafarikILK Dresden The event will take place on June 12 in Chorzów. The topic of Mathias' presentation is adaptation options of thermally driven cooling and ice slurry for energy and cost efficient district cooling. In order to be able to lower the temperature in Germany heating networks and still implement heat-driven refrigeration, adjustments to the sorption refrigeration technology are required. In addition, combinations with electrically powered refrigeration or the integration of storage to solve the challenges are conceivable. The presentation will introduce some options. Mathias has a diploma in process engineering. For his PhD thesis he set up a solar thermally driven ammonia-water absorption chiller with latent heat storage. He started working for the Institute of Air Handling and Refrigeration (ILK Dresden) in 2002 with the main focus in absorption refrigeration technology. He was involved in several developments of innovative thermally driven chillers with different working fluids. His team was awarded the German refrigeration prize in 2018 for the development of a water/LiBr absorption chiller using asymmetrical plate heat exchangers. Another focus of his work is using water as refrigerant in compression systems with vacuum ice being one of the applications. Mathias is head of department of applied energy engineering at ILK.
